I was going to post this as a reply to a commenter who said in part “…I fear if Americans don’t wake up and get involved this Congress [will] do what the terrorist could not…” but I thought I’d expand on it a little and make a post out of it.
I don’t think its a question of Americans waking up… They’re wide awake and mad as hell. Just look at the approval ratings for the President and for Congress, people aren’t happy with either.
Congress is spending like a bunch of power crazed politicians and President has failed to provide any kind of leadership. That’s the thing I don’t think our elected leaders or the pundits understand. American’s have lost faith in the government’s ability to act responsibly and get things done.
Rank and file republicans are disgusted with the President because he hasn’t been an effective advocate for conservative principles and they’re disgusted with republicans in congress because they’ve completely abandoned those principles.
Democrats have their own problems… The party is split between the very vocal radical left who are pissed off because the democrats in congress haven’t been able push through their agenda and old school centrist democrats who feel like the party is abandoning them by catering to the radicals.
Unfortunately, unless something changes drastically between now and November all this anger and apathy, particularly on the republican side, means that republicans are going to lose more seats in Congress and Barack Obama will be the next President.
That said I don’t think Barack Obama’s going to win because people like or agree with his policy ideas I tend to think it has more to do with pent up frustrations and a desire for “change” coupled with the perception that John McCain is part of the problem.
